NISMO stands for Nissan Motorsports International, Nissan’s dedicated motorsport and performance division. Originally created in 1984, NISMO is the brainchild of Nissan engineers who wanted to take performance and racing seriously. Today, NISMO not only represents Nissan’s motorsport ambitions but also stands as a label for street-legal, high-performance models that bring race-inspired technology to everyday drivers.
NISMO was formed in 1984 in Tokyo when two Nissan motorsport departments merged (The Advertising Division based in Omori and the Special Car Testing Division in Oppama) bridging the gap between race cars and production vehicles.
NISMO's journey started with a simple mission: to bring Nissan's motorsport expertise to both the racing world and Nissan’s lineup of consumer vehicles. Nissan initially established NISMO to help develop vehicles that could compete in various international racing series. Over time, as the demand for high-performance consumer vehicles grew, Nissan extended the NISMO touch to road cars.
By the early 2000s, Nissan started offering NISMO-branded versions of some of their most popular models, including the 350Z and later the GT-R. Each NISMO vehicle not only had more horsepower but also better handling, aerodynamics, and unique design touches that appealed to car enthusiasts who wanted something sporty and distinctive.
What sets NISMO models apart are the engineering tweaks that aim to balance power, speed, and handling. Each NISMO model undergoes a series of upgrades to its engine, suspension, and even its aerodynamics. The goal is always the same: maximum performance without compromising daily drivability.
