Hybrid Technology

Hybrid cars are, quite simply, cars which use two forms of power, usually a petrol or diesel engine in combination with an electric motor. With the stunning DS5 Hybrid4, Citroën launched its first production diesel hybrid, with the Top Gear Live show for its UK debut.

Why are Hybrids Important to Citroën?

Environmentalists have heralded hybrid vehicles as an important advance in the development of more environmentally friendly motoring. This is because the car’s partial use of an electric motor means less petrol or diesel is burnt, and when the hybrid car is operating in its purely electric mode it has zero emissions. Added technology to hybrid cars, such as stop-start technology and regenerative braking – whereby energy generated from braking is reused to power the car – add to the green appeal of hybrids.

Hybrid cars have been around for longer than many might realise, with Sir David Salomon developing a car that combined a light electric motor and heavy storage batteries in 1870. In 1899, there were two hybrids at the Paris Motor Show and in the early part of the 20th century, there were further experiments with hybrid vehicles. But it’s only in recent decades that hybrid cars have been sold on the mass market in tandem with growing concern for the environment. The Future of Citroën’s Hybrid Cars

The Citroën Revolte is a chic city car and plug-in hybrid concept that was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009. At the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the HYmotion4 concept was launched to show off the brand’s latest hybrid technology with the C4 HYmotion2 and C-Cactus concepts reflecting Citroën’s plans to make mass market hybrids. At the other end of the hybrid spectrum is the C4 WRC HYmotion4 which shows off hybrid technology when applied to sports cars.

A new Peugeot 107 will be introduced in February 2012 featuring a stylish ‘new face’, improved fuel economy, lower CO2 emissions and enhanced equipment with an upgraded interior.

The 107’s fun and stylish appeal, along with its accomplished economical three-cylinder petrol engine, has helped Peugeot take a lead in low-CO2 urban motoring, and this is now strengthened further with emissions of just 99 g/km of CO2.

The new re-styled 107 is instantly recognisable by the changes to the car’s front styling, with a deeper and lower front panel with a housing for the front fog lights; LED lights and a re-designed front bumper.

As part of the re-style of the 107 range, there are three trim levels on offer which have been named in line with other Peugeot range models (Access, Active and Allure). Within these trim levels, features such as Peugeot Connect Bluetooth and USB and LED Daytime running lights are now available for the first time on the 107 range.

In addition to the new features available, the re-styled range also offers better equipment across the range with air conditioning now standard on Active level versions and alloy wheels, rev counter, Peugeot Connect Bluetooth and USB standard on Allure level versions.

The new 107 is available in 3-door and 5-door versions, and adopts a competitive pricing strategy with the range starting from just £5,995.

Peugeot has further cause to celebrate today after scooping a brace of accolades in the coveted Diesel Car Magazine, ‘Car of the Year Awards 2011’.

Peugeot’s ground-breaking 3008 HYbrid4 has won its first award – five months before it goes on sale in the UK. Awarded Diesel Car Magazine’s ‘Best Eco Car of 2011’, the new model, which will use Peugeot’s advanced diesel electric hybrid technology, will set a new benchmark for low CO2 emissions when launched in the autumn.

Ian Robertson, Editor, Diesel Car Magazine, said: “The 3008 is one of the very best crossovers, and as a diesel-electric hybrid it’s an ace combination. The 3008 HYbrid4 is a green-friendly model for the real world that can be refuelled within minutes, not hours.”

The new vehicle was based on the chassis of the 307 but has different bodywork and is slightly larger. Midway through 2008 it held the record as the most fuel efficient car on the mainstream market over a distance of 9,060 miles. In the UK, the basic 1.4litre three-door hatchback was positioned as a competitor to the Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf.
